It's just a myth that roosters crow loudly at sunrise. They crow at freakin' 4:30 in the morning.
This strip was based on some conversations I had with realtors while looking for a house to rent. They had some "rural" properties that freaked out prospective tenants because the properties were...well...actually rural.
One of the rental houses came with its own rooster - a previous tenant's pet that had decided it never wanted to leave.
The chicken illustration is copied from a photograph. But I took the photograph...so...it's not cheating?
