Feudal Effort

I wrote this right after taking my wife backpacking for the first time. A family of black bears crashed into our campsite late at night on our first day - we could only see their glowing eyes reflected in the flashlights, and hear their growling  coming from about five yards away. There were lightning bugs all over, each one looking like a glint of light from a bear's eye. After blowing our whistles and banging pots for a while, they grunted and left. I slept with my Kukri Machete close by that night.
